BQ24072: Was the root cause of the IC entering usb-100 when it should be in usb-500 found?

Based on the linked question by Eric Robertson1 about the BQ24072 charging in USB100 instead of usb500 I would like to know what the root cause was if possible. Also, how can we avoid such an issue if we use the BQ24074 instead?
