TPS62140: How to simulate gain and phase margin

Part Number: TPS62140

I'd like to simulate gain and phase margin for the TPS62140, with my input and output components.  I found SLVA301, which would be very useful, except that it is too old to have any information about the TPS62140.  Can you either provide me with the Vramp and internal loop filter schematic and values, or point me to a reference that has this info, so that I can build a good loop model for the TPS62140?

  • Oh, and one more thing...this is already designed into a qualified production solution, so please don't tell me to choose a different part.  Please just answer my question.

  • SLVA301 is referring to voltage mode control so the parameters used there will not align with the TPS62140 as it uses a proprietary DCS-control scheme. The typical way to simulate gain/phase on this is to use a simplis model but there isn’t one available for this part. Only time domain model (transient) is available on the product page. would you like me to request the modeling team for a simplis model? You’d need to have simplis simulation tool and license to be able to simulate it.

    Thanks,

  • Amod, thank you for the response.  I don't have Simplis, but I could get it.  How long would it take the modeling team to generate a model for this part, and would that model be validated against measurements with different L/C loads, or would it be up to me to validate the model?  The TPS62140 is only ever used in the CCM mode in my circuit, so is there a set of simplified compensator and modulator values that I could use to build a simplified AC model like the one in figure 18 of SLVA301?  That's all I need...

  • Shawn,

unfortunately the control scheme is quite intricate and has multiple loops with non-linearities. So it will be hard to simplify it with a compensator/modulator approach. Atleast at the moment, we do not have such a model. I would recommend making a model in SIMPLIS that can be used to run AC and transient simulations as well. I will put in a request with the modeling team and they can update you of updates. Typically it can take a few weeks to make.

    thanks,

    Amod
