TPS92518-Q1: confirmation with current

Part Number: TPS92518-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS92518

Hi Team,

Customer is searching for a LED driver for automotive and they are interested with TPS92518. Below is the inquiry.

1. Can this driver handle different currents? so is it possible to adjust the current settings via SPI?
> based from the discussion in this link : https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management/f/power-management-forum/752536/tps92518-output-current-problem , this driver can handle different currents via SPI.

2. The input voltage is between 20 and 40V. The output current is 200mA to 3.5A. Is it possible to reach this values with only one single inductor with around 120uH?

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Maynard

  • Hello Maynard,

    1)  Yes it can by adjusting LEDx_PKTH_DAC(7:0).

    2)  Yes, though the set-point accuracy at lower current will not be as good.  It may go into discontinuous mode depending on the LED voltage and on/off time which will still operate correct.

  • Hi Irwin,

    Thank you for your response.

What would be the ideal inductor setup for the above setup?

    Thank you.

    Regards,

    Maynard

  • Hi Maynard,

This depends on a few things, physical size, desired current ripple (what the application needs), Vin, Vled, switching frequency over the range of input and output voltage.  If there are output capacitors, if they are PWM dimming can also affect the design.  I can go through calculations for a design if needed.

    Vin range, 20V - 40V

    Iled, 0.2A - 3.5A

    Vled range?

    maximum switching frequency?

    Best Regards,
