LM5170EVM-BIDIR: [URGENT] IOUT1 BIDIR Current Sense

Part Number: LM5170EVM-BIDIR
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5170

Hi,

I’m using the LM5170 EVM and I want to understand how Iout1 changes when current direction changes between 48V port and 12V port.

To elaborate, does IOUT1 give negative value when in the buck mode and positive values when in boost mode? Or is there a range of current sense values that allows to distinguish between current direction?

  • Hi,

The IOUT is already reporting the inductor current and it does not change signs with the DIR.  In the buck mode, it is equivalent to the load current, and in the boost mode if it is equivalent to the input current.

    Hope this clarifies.

  • Got it, that makes sense.

Basically I need to test dynamic charging and discharging, will I damage the EVM if the current changes direction without changing the configuration using the DIR pin?

Is there any way I can bypass the DIR functionality to allow automatic bidirectional power transfer capability?

  • You cannot bypass the DIR to allow bidirectional transfer.  DIR must be used.  You must did something wrong during your test.

You need to have two batteries on the two output ports, or equivalent ones consisting of a voltage source and an e-load such that each can perform both sourcing and sinking function. Then you just need to flip the DIR to force the power flow direction change.

    Thanks,

    Youhao
