BQ76952: SRP and SRN filter cap to VSS

Part Number: BQ76952

Hi, it's mentioned in page64 that "Capacitors should not be connected from the pins to VSS" while in page75 it's told "Optional 0.1-uF filter capacitors can be added at each sense input pin to ground".  What's the real story? If 0.1uF is increased, say 1uF, what will happen then?

BTW, could two-stage RC filter be placed between SRP and SRN in order to further filter out the ripple across the shunt resistor when pack is charged? Any restriction about the low-pass filter? Thanks.

  • Hi Andrew,

The CC works best if the filtering is only differential as noted on page 64.  It can best respond to sudden changes in current.  In the vision of the design SRP and VSS would connect to the battery side of the sense resistor on the board with minimal trace distance.  Real systems vary in construction so the author has added the optional 0.1 uF capacitors to SRP and SRN to avoid resets from transients which can occur in some systems. These added filter capacitors will slow the edges of the current changes and may result is slightly lower accuracy for the CC with dynamic loads.  The author missed the inconsistency created when adding the optional filter capacitor note on page 75.

You could add more filtering, it will again slow response to current.  The CC is an integrating converter so it should generally respond well to the ripple in the waveform and we would recommend the standard filter.
