BQ24041: Placing BQ24041 instead BQ24040

Hi.

For a project we are considering change the BQ24040 and place the BQ24041.

In the project we have we need to have an output with and without a cell connected to the output. And the output current is almost 1 A.

We have the following:

To place the BQ24041 and have same behavior we reviewed the datasheet and we will remove the R201 connected to Pre-term in BQ24040 and change the R202 connected to TS in BQ24040 to a 0 Ohms resistor to enable always the BQ24041.

Could you tell me if the analysis is ok, that we get same behavior only doing that?, in case not, could you explain me the difference or what we need to have same behavior?

Hi Asael,

I'm not sure I understand your expected behavior here, the output behavior of bq24040 and bq24041 are very similar. If you want a useable system output with no battery you should consider a powerpath device like BQ24072.

Hi Nick.

In the datasheet in page 12 mentioned that the charger can be used to charge a battery, power a system of both.

With the configuration I have for the BQ24040 I can charge the battery or power the system without battery or both.

I want know if I place the BQ24041 instead the BQ24040, the BQ24041 has some different pins, so, to have the possibility to only charge, or power the system without battery or charge and power the system at same time, question is if only making the changes mentioned, the BQ24041 will work as I want or I need anything else?

Hello,

The bq24041 may be better suited for this because it does not have a battery detect routine like bq24040, you will see a constant voltage on the OUT pin when no battery is connected.

Thanks for the reply Nick.

So, just to be sure, only with keep low the BAT_EN pin, always I will have an output, right?

And the ASI, if I don't use that pin, could be floating?

Yes you would keep BAT_EN low, ASI can be left floating.
