CSD97370Q5M in high output voltage application

I plan to use CSD97370 with Vin=22V, Vout=16V. The page 2 of the datasheet indicates a max 5.5V output voltage in recommended operation condition.

Q1: Can I operate CSD97370 at Vout=16V?

Q2: Since my operating Vout is significantly higher than the power benchmark 1.2V vout, can I still calculate power loss and SOA temperature based on the graph in the datasheet?

Q3: can someone at TI help explain a bit why high Vout is problem for this device or why the power loss at Vout=16V is significantly higher than the power loss at Vout=1.2V?

Thank you very much.

  • While I am still waiting on an official reply from one of our systems engineers, I can tell you that this power level, (16V * 20A) is way more power than the device can handle. What output current do you require?
  • Just got the following response from our applications team:

"22Vin to 16Vout with 20A output current has not been tested for this part. It may work if they use heatsink and with strong airflow to cool the HS FET down.

This part is designed for low duty cycle application so HS FET is much smaller than the LS. With this extreme condition HS FET is stressed with both high switching and conduction losses so efficiency will be much worse and thermal is the potential problem."
