LP3943 vs. TLC59116

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC59116, LP3943, LP55231

Hi,

Can someone highlight the major differences between the LP3943 and the TLC59116? They seem like very similar devices to me.

Thank You

  • Mike,

Here are some quick differences I see going through the two datasheets. Hope this helps.

    LP3943:
Max current of 25mA per channel
Each LED uses a current setting resistor
Max voltage on LED pins: 6V
Programmable PWM by setting to one of two different options.

    TLC59116:
Max current of 120mA per channel
Option for individual current setting resistor OR single resistor for all channels.
    Current multiplier option
Max voltage on LED pins: 17V
Programmable PWM through individual PWM registers or a group PWM feature
    Blinking option for LEDs
    Error detection
  • Dear Harry,

Could LP3943 support the breathing behavior?

My customer need 15-ch LED driver that support breathing behavior.
    I think LP3943 can't support breathing behavior, so I promote TLC59116.
    Am I right?

    Thanks
  • Hi Mike,

Both devices do not have dedicated LED engine to support breathing behavior, however,  this behavior can be accomplished by keep sending i2c commands to the device adjust the brightness accordingly.

You should also take a look at LP55231, it has 3 LED engines, once the pattern is loaded, the microcontroller only needs to send a command to start the pattern. The draw back is it only has 9 channels, they will need 2 LP55231.

    Regards
