BQ24171EVM

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CSD17313Q2

I have a customer who is testing the BQ24171EVM.

For their system they are charging a 2s2p Li-ion battery pack with a max input of 4A.

They have modified the schematic as follows:

  1. Float Voltage 8.2V (resistor values changed from sch to HW)
  2. Charge current 3A (resistor values different between sch and HW)

During hardware validation, they have encountered a failure during an Over-Voltage test of Q2 on the EVM (CSD17313Q2). Q2 failed SHORTED between DRAIN and SOURCE at 20V.

Do you have comments as to why this component would fail under the scenario above? What is the limiting factor here and would it be possible to modify external components to make a design that would be robust with input voltage up to and even above 20V?

Thank you for your feedback.
