BQ40Z50-R1: max current

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50-R1

Hi,

Is there a maximum discharge current that the BQ40Z50-R1 can support?

From my point of view, if I use 1mohms sens resitor, use appropriate MOSFETs, a battery pack can have a discharge current of up to 100A. (keeping Vsense below 0.1V)

Am I right?

Best regards,

Grégory

  • Hello Gregory,

Yes your logic is correct with regards to the 1mohm sense resistor and 100A max to keep the Vsense below 100mV. The max value that the current registers can support is 32767 with units of mA. To support 100A, you will have to do current scaling. Where during current calibration you enter a value 5x lower than the actual current applied. Then you will have to scale all current related parameters that you've entered 5x lower including design capacity.

See section 2 of this app note for guidance on current scaling

How to Calibrate for Current Scaling: The current must be scaled during the calibration phase. If 2x scaling is used, then the current is divided by 2. If a 4-A discharge current is used to calibrate the pack, then –2000 mA is entered as the actual current. All current and capacity parameters are reported at half the actual value and the host must to multiply these parameters by the scale factor to find the true value.
