Replacement for LT3748

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC25230, UCC28704

Hi Team,

Can you please recommend a replacement for the LT3748? I looked on the competitor cross reference search and found the UCC25230, but the UCC25230 does not look like it can produce 10W on the output and I need 10W minimum.

Thank you,

Jared

  • Jared,

The TI cross-ref to the LT part in this case is type F - similar functionality, but not equivalent.

In this case, the two parts are quite different - the LT part is a PSR (primary-side-regulated) flyback controller that drives an external FET - so this allows it to be scaled to higher power as needed by choice of the right FET.

On the other hand, the UCC25230 has internal FET's, so the Rds(on) of those FET's plus the thermal capability of the IC package will limit the power and output current capability.

In addition, the UCC25230 is really a buck or fly-buck controller, where the isolated second output is generated from an isolated winding on the buck inductor.

Since the UCC25230 was designed as a bias supply generator for Telecoms applications, it's not likely to be able to deliver 10 W of output power. As a bias supply for 1-2 W power, it would provide a very compact and competitive solution.

What is your spec/requirement? What is the input voltage range and output voltage? There may a different part that could be recommended, such as UCC28704 or similar PSR flyback controllers, but TI does not have a direct cross to the LT part. The UCC28704 could deliver similar functionality, but would require a primary-referenced aux winding on the transformer for feedback and bias power.

    Thanks,
    Bernard
  • Hi Bernard,

Thank you for the detailed response. The input voltage is 12V and the output voltage needs to be ~5.25V @ 2A. A key feature that I would like to have is no third winding or opto-isolator required for regulation. the UCC28704 looks like a great, simple device, but does require an additional winding for the regulation. Do we have anything that does not require that?

    Thank you!

Unfortunately no, we don't have any Flyback controllers that I am aware of that can regulate from the drain of the primary FET. All the PSR controllers are targetted at offline AC input where the voltages are much higher, so FET drain sensing becomes a lot less practical.
