LM317 Output Accuracy

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM317

Hi Team

My customer is using LM317 and has problem with output voltage accuracy, in DATASHEET, LM317 claimed that the load regulation max is 1.5% error, but internal reference is 1.2,1.25,1.3V value, so it's 4% error, I'm wondering how to grantee the accuracy of output voltage, it seems not aligned in DATASHEET

  • Hello Randy,

Load regulation is 1.5% maximum, but this specification is separate from the initial tolerance of the internal reference.
The initial tolerence of the internal reference is 4% as you mentioned, but the variation for a given device can vary up to 1.5% across loading and temperature.

    For example:
A given device can have an initial reference voltage tolerance of say 1.25V at 10mA, but this initial voltage can only vary up to 1.5% across process and temperature.
The 1.2 to 1.3V is an initial tolerance, but for a given device over loading conditions it cannot vary more than 1.5%.

I hope this helps to clarify. Please let me know if you have additional questions.

    Best,
    Michael
