LMZ12003: Soldering the Exposed Pad of LMZ12003 by Hand

Hello,

The datasheet for LMZ12003 suggests that its package allows for hand soldering. Are there recommended methods how to solder the exposed pad manually? Should it be done using a hot-air gun, or would I be able to make a larger solder pad (as in larger then the body of the module) in order to be able to heat up solder under the exposed pad (see attached image)?

Hi,

It's better to solder it with heat gun. Also larger solder pad will help, you can heat the PCB with heat gun and solder the device on PCB with soldering iron at the same time.

Hi Luke,

Thanks for the advice. Do you suggest placing solder before-hand on both the pad of the switcher and the pad on the PCB?

Hi Alan,

The video is certainly useful information, however I was looking for a more basic process. As I mentioned, the datasheet states that the package allows hand soldering so I was simply looking for TI's recommendation on that procedure.

Hi,
If you only have soldering iron and heat gun. First, coat the pads of module and PCB with solder using soldering iron, the solder layer over the PADs should be as thin as possible. Sencond heat the PCB pad with heat gun until the solder melt ( setting the air temp around 350C), then put the module on PCB immediately, heat for several seconds until it's jointed.
If you have complete soldering tools as shown in the vedio, pls follow that way.
