TPS62132: Do I really have to use shielded inductors when using TI's Buck converters?

Part Number: TPS62132
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62130EVM-505, TPS62140EVM-505, TPS62150EVM-505,

Hi, I'm creating my custom PCB using the TPS62132RGTR.

In the SLVU437A (TPS62130EVM-505, TPS62140EVM-505, and TPS62150EVM-505 Evaluation Modules),

the EVM used a shielded inductor XFL4020-222MEC.

The shielded inductors are quite expensive and big, compared to the 1008 inched unshielded inductors like the below one.

So my question is, do I really have to use the shielded inductor recommended in the EVM datasheet?

Or can I choose the unshielded inductor?

  • Hi David,

Of course you can use a different inductor like the DFE252012F-2R2M. This inductor is shielded as well as mentioned in its DS.
What is your application and what are your power requirements (Vin range, Iout max)?

    Thanks & Regards,
    Michael
  • Hi, Michael. I haven't noticed that the DFE252012F-2R2M was a shielded one; I just checked the 1008 (2520 Metric), that's all.

That 1008 chip is far smaller than the  XFL4020-222MEC.

I use the TPS62132RGTR. I feed a 9V battery as the input voltage.

The TPS62132 releases steady 3.3-volt output. I connect this output to the

    CC3200R1M1RGCR Wi-Fi MCU,

    W25Q80BLUXIG 1MB flash memory, and

    PCA9536DGKR LED driver.

    I expect the current consumption of each ICs as the following;

    CC3200R1M1RGCR - 400mA (Wi-FI TX/RX, I2C, SPI, PWM, etc)

    W25Q80BLUXIG  - 4mA (when active using SPI) / 1uA (when power down)

    PCA9536DGKR - 200mA (continuous current through GND)

    I'm a newbie in buck/boost converter.

Since the TPS62132RGTR can give up to 3A output current, this is quite an overkill. However, it is my prototype PCB so I just choose the TPS62132RGTR.

I'll use the TPS62162DSGR in the next PCB design.

In this case, do I really have to use the XFL4020-222MEC? My PCB has to be small so I want to populate small inductors.

Can you recommend me a small inductor, whether it is shielded or not, to make the TPS62132RGTR work?

What about this LQM18PN2R2MFRL Murata inductor?

  • Thanks for your info.

Please be aware that the DCR of the inductors is different. This affects the efficiency.

Four your application i would recommend to use the DFE252012F inductor.
Please follow the layout recommendation and part selection from the TPS621332 DS.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Michael
