TPS7A4101: TPS7A1 gets very hot

Hello,

i use the TPS7A41 to regulate 30V-43V to 10V.

Look at my schematic picture.

It gets very hot, i can't touch it, but it works tough.

Hi Drave,

What is the load current in your application? With such a large drop in voltage, you are likely dissipating a lot of power in the LDO. As long as you remain within the operating junction temperature range (-40 to 125C) your LDO should work as designed; however, it will heat up as it dissipates power.

Hi Ryan,

the load current is 15mA. Can i reduce the heat ? It destroys my shrink tube.
If not, is there an alternative ?

Hi Drave,

In order to reduce the amount of heat dissipated you will need to reduce the voltage drop across the LDO. This can be accomplished a few different ways. A DCDC switching regulator will efficiently reduce the voltage drop and the LDO's PSRR will reduce the switching noise.

You could split the voltage drop across multiple LDOs in series or drop some of the voltage across a resistor in front of the LDO. These last two would still dissipate a lot of heat; however, the heat would be spread across the LDOs/resistor.
