LP3985: Shut down if Vin > abs max?

Part Number: LP3985

Hi,

Recently my customer tested the LP3985 with Vin > abs max, let's say 7V. He noticed that the device will shut down. If 7V is reduced to 5V, the device works again. Is this part of the protection and is a confirmed feature for LP3985? I couldn't find this in the datasheet.

Thanks.

  • HI YY,

Anytime you go above the absolute maximum voltage, you risk permanently damaging the device.

I am not sure of the test conditions for the above test, but is there any chance it went into thermal shutdown?

    Regards,
  • Hi John,

I suspect that too initially. But that test was carried out without load. So, I can't be sure it is the thermal shutdown. Anyway, I just want to confirm the availability of this protection feature. Is it a Yes or No?

  • "... Is it a Yes or No? ..."

No. There is no over-voltage protection feature in the LP3985.

Do not mistake this particular device behavior as a 'protection feature', it's not.

Be aware that any LP3985 device subjected to Vin>6.5V when the EN pin is connected to the IN pin should probably be considered 'walking wounded' as the EN internal structure (metallization) is probably damaged.
