TLV704: Output Short Circuit

Part Number: TLV704
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS709, TLV702, TLV707, TLV705

Hello,

We are considering shorting the output of this LDO to ground for 500ms in order to reset our MCU. I don't see any short circuit protection mentioned in the datasheet, so will this device source maximum load current to ground for that half second?

If so, how much current could we expect? Section 7.3.1 says the current is limited to 250mA, but page 6 specifies the max current up to 1A.

Thank you and let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi Ryan,

You are correct if you short the output to GND it will continuously source its maximum amount of current. For this LDO that is between 160 mA - 1A (250 mA typ). Also, if Vin is too high the device may heat up to a point where it becomes damaged as this LDO does not have thermal shutdown.

Could you use an LDO with an EN pin and when you reset the MCU you could also disable the LDO?

If this is an option you can use TPS709 if you need the wide Vin, or TLV702, TLV705, or TLV707 if the wide Vin capability is not necessary.

    Best Regards,
    Mark
