TPS22966: Use with Hot Plugin

Part Number: TPS22966

Hi

My Customer has question.

Customers wish to use TPS 22966 as a measure against hot plugin.

TPS22966.pdf

・It will be connected in the order of GND => VIN 1 and VIN 2.
・While the pad terminal is sliding there is a possibility that the contact of GND or VIN 1, VIN 2 is momentarily separated.
Is there a possibility of problems with TPS22966?

  • Hi T Kishi,

The TPS22966 is not designed for hot plug applications because of its 6V abs max and lack of OVP features. When VIN1 and VIN2 are disconnected and reconnected, there is a chance that the voltage transients will exceed 6V, and if this is the case then the part will likely be damaged.

As for the momentary separation of GND, this device does not have any "loss of GND" features, and we do not characterize this behavior. The best way to see if this will work is to test it under the customer's use case.

In general, we would recommend a TVS or other suppression diode to keep the voltage on VIN under 6V.

    Thanks,
