Inductor of TPS54A20

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54A20

I have questions about inductor of TPS54A20.

In datasheet p.25, we use DFE252012F-R33M.

In datasheet of DFE252012F-R33M, Rated current(Isat) is 7600mA.

And Rated current (Itemp) is 5100mA.

But, in datasheet of TPS54A20 p.25, Saturation Current Rating is 8.5A.

Question 1.

Please tell us the reason of 8.5A.

Question 2.

Please tell us the definition of Saturation Current Rating in TPS54A20 datasheet p.25.

Question 3.

8.5 A indicates either Rated current(Isat) or Rated current (Itemp)?

  • I will look into this.  It may be a few days though.

  • The inductors used on the EVM are:
    L1, L2 220nH Inductor, 220 nH, 7.2 A, 0.0075 ohm, SMD 3.2x2.5mm MLA-FY12NR22N-M3-RU, Mag Layers
    1. Since this is a two phase circuit, each leg only supplies half the current.
    2. Saturation current is the current at which an inductor drops a certain percentage of its inductance. The percent vries from manufacturer to manufacturer. Usually 10 to 30 % , I think I have seen as high as 40% from some.
    3. Datasheet says it is Saturation Current, not heating current.
  • The intention of the table on page 25 of the TPS54A20 datasheet is to report the saturation current rating of each inductor as specified by the manufacturer. It appears that the present version of the DFE252012F-R33M datasheet records 7.6A. I suggest using that number as the saturation current rating of the DFE252012F-R33M. Please ignore the 8.5A saturation current rating listed in the table on page 25 of the TPS54A20 datasheet.
