LM117: datasheet discrepancy - orientation of the pins on the TO-3 package.

Part Number: LM117

LM117K_STEEL/NOPB - confusion about the orientation of the pins w.r.t pin assignment on the TO-3 package.

please confirm the latest datasheet is dated OCTOBER2015

the new datasheet shows a bottom view of the TO-3 package on page 3 that is contradictory to the detailed NDS0002A package drawing on page 43. It almost looks like the views are rotated w.r.t. each other.

Is the pin assignment for the TO-3 package in the Table on page 3 correct (ADJ on pin1 and VIN on pin2)?

In the detailed drawing on page 43, is the view on the left a bottom view or a top view?

When mounting a TO-3 part to a pcb with a live case (VOUT), what precautions do we need to take for the pcb design. Do we clear out solder mask below entire device or just use plated through hole vias for the mounting holes?

  • Hi Diane,

On page 3 of datasheet shows TO3 pkg bottom view with the pin numbers shown with description i.e. Adjust in (1) and Vin pin (2) . Figure on Pg 43 is also bottom view ( as you can see dotted line highlighting the case top). Picture on pg 43 is rotated 180 degree thus it may seem different.

With regards to the Mounting on PCB will provide you any guidance that our quality group recommends.
  • Hi Diane,

TI recommends that you consult IPC-2221 " Generic Standard on Printed Board Design" with regards to mounting TO3 on PCB.
