BQ2970: Does BQ29700 support 0V charging?

Part Number: BQ2970
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2973,

I can't work out from the datasheets if the BQ29700 protection circuit I'm using supports 0V charging or not.  There are two consecutive paragraphs about 0v charging in the datasheet ( which covers bq2970 - bq2973), one saying 0v charging available (9.4.6) , the next saying not (9.4.7)  - but there's no indication of which devices support it and which don't.

  • Hi Paul,

The wording is definitely confusing! The Available and Unavailable refer to whether or not 0V Charging is permissible or impermissible for the particular battery.

The first paragraph describes how to charge the battery if 0V charging is permissible for that battery

The second paragraph describes how to set a voltage threshold to prevent charging the battery below that threshold if 0V charging is impermissible for that battery.

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Kahler
  • OK, so I went back and carefully re-read the whole thing. Are we looking at the same datasheet?  Because it seems to me now that you can't charge a battery if its less than Voinh ( 0.75V), and that is not user settable.

So it looks like the term "0V charging" is somewhat misleading.

  • Hi Paul,

The bq device is capable in either scenario. The dependence is upon the capability of the battery, per the battery manufacturer's instructions.

The wording could definitely be improved. It is confusing :(

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Kahler
