TPS65218: EEPROM settings for Zynq

Part Number: TPS65218
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-00478, , TPS650864

I refer to TI's TIDA-00478 Test Report.

I have a customer planning to use the TPS65218 on a Xilinx Zynq design.  The customer will need to program the TPS65218 for the correct voltage rails and power up sequence .

Seems that programming the TPS65218 is not an easy task, so I need to ask the following:

Can TI provide the EEPROM settings as required for the Zynq?

How can the customer program the TPS65218 .... reading through the data sheet, and other posts on e2e, seems it is not an simple task.

Are TI able to provide samples of the TPS65218 which are already programmed for use with the Xilinx Zynq?

Thanks

Erich Nast

  • Erich,

Programming a TPS65218 is something that can be done at start-up, which I could help walk you through.

However, the better option would be the TPS650864 as it is designed specifically for Xilinx.

I've notified our expert on that device so he can help you if you have any more questions.

    Thank you,
    Nick
  • Hi Nick, thanks for the response. It would be appreciated if you could advise on how to program the TPS65218 at startup. The problem I see, is that at startup, the default outputs are not correct for the Zynq, so the concern is that at powerup, the Zynq might be damaged. So the better option would be that the part be programmed BEFORE production, using a programming cable as described in the TPS65218 EVM users guide. Is this an option?

Unfortunately the design has been finalised, so no chance to now change to the TPS650864.
  • Erich,

Unfortunately we do not have an OTP for the TPS65218 that has been designed for the Zynq. If you want to have a new OTP made we can do that, but a business case needs to be made for it. I will look into it and get back to you.

The way that the EVM user's guide describes re-programming the device is the same method that would be used to re-program the device after power-up. This would have to be done after each power-up because once the device is turned off it will go back to its default settings as described by its OTP.

What is the timeline like for this project?

    Thank you,
    Nick
  • Hi Nick,

Is the data sheet then incorrect or am I misunderstanding when it states that there is EEPROM on the chip which can be used to store new default power up values? See paragraph 5.
My customer hopes to go into production in Feb 2018, but volumes will not be high enough to justify TI doing an OTP version.
So we would need to come up with a plan B on how to re-program the TPS65218 using the Zynq itself I guess. Do TI have any suggestions on this?
Perhaps we can take it offline?
  • Erich,

Taking this offline would actually be helpful.

    Thanks,
    Nick
