BQ76PL455EVM: bq76PL455EVM "Unable to open COM port"

I have checked with the FTDI Settings and tried with another PC.The Same is happening. With GUI im getting "Unable to open com Port" message.

D22 lights up and I measured the voltages on the board as follows.

VIO = 4.98

VDIG = 5.33

V5VA0 = 5.3

VM =-5.2

CHP = 2.67

VREF = 2.5

VP1 = 5.33

TOP = 23.7

TX = 4.98

RX = 5.08

WAKEUP = 0

FLT-N = 0

Hi Raman,

It appears that the board is set up correctly - thank you for sharing the image.

Have you verified that your FTDI driver is up to date?

I would also try switching USB ports.... for whatever reason this seems to help from time to time.

I tried with another PCs and another USB. Driver was downloaded from http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

Did it work?

Do you have another cable to try with?

What operating system were on the PC's? I don't think it should be a problem, but it seems that the board should communicate without issue. Can you send commands through Putty or something similar?

Hi Raman

Can you use a scope/logic analyzer to see if there is any data flowing to and from the device?

This happens from time to time... can you measure the cell voltages to make sure they are in correct order?

I would try to send data manually through Putty, or even with an MCU. Something like an arduino would work for quick prototyping.

If all else fails... try re-installing the GUI and see what happens, and ensure that you are working as administrator when you do it.

Hi Raman,

Could I ask you to verify which FTDI driver you have installed?

Just a sanity check, but the voltage measurements were at the IC, correct?

A reinstall of the driver and GUI may be a next step, in case something was corrupted.

It seems like the FTDI driver is not using the virtual comm port correctly if your board is waking up.

Hi Raman,

I think the easiest option will be to use an oscilloscope or logic analyzer to see if there is traffic being sent from the virtual comm port to the pl455.

You may also try seeing if a comm port is being recognized in your device manager

Hi Raman,

Thanks for checking and sharing... it seems that the problem is indeed between the COMM port and the driver, since there is no data being sent.

Another thing to try... can you verify that the COMM port used by the FTDI driver(looked like COM8) matches the COM port found by the GUI when you go to open it?

COM port it really corresponds. The application detects the virtual com port of uart, but there is no connection. Example:

Hi Raman,

Thanks for checking... I apologize that this seems to be dragging on - this really is quite strange.

I can offer two suggestions...

1) If the other PC you tried on used the same OS, I would attempt to use a different OS. I understand that it may not be possible. I use windows 7 with no issue, but it could be something strange with windows 7 ultimate

2) Try a reinstall of the pl455 GUI and FTDI driver. Try installing with administrative rights and possibly disabling the firewall. It is possible something got corrupted.

Hi Raman,

This is good! Can you try to change the baud from 9600 to 250k, and then send " 81 00 0A 00 2E9C" to see if there is a response. This should read the device address register and return an address of "00"

You may consider trying to replace this IC as a swap test.

Unfortunately, I am only an engineer supporting technical issues for the pl455... I would point you to the customer service center to ask about returning an EVM.

Hi David!

What about SW2 position on board. (SW2 - COMM Mode Select switch package)Specification variat is CTS 204-221, but I get CTS 204-212. These connectors short-circuit different groups of contacts.

Hi Raman,

I think this should be ok - the 212 variants are populated on my board as well.

Do you happen to have an extra EVM? I would be interested to see if a different EVM can communicate, and possibly if it can communicate to this particular board as a stacked device.

Hi David,

The 212 variant not correct for this device. It's connect different pins than 221. If we want connect some emv, it's did't will correctly.

I removed my old driver and installed your version and I have no issue.
everything looks find.

Do this for me.
You will see big 200R resistor on the evm.
It's R52 or R54.

Can you short one of them and try? Just one.
