LP2992: Thermal shutdown tolerance for LP2992 & LM2985

Part Number: LP2992
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP2985

Hi,

Both LP2992 and LM2985 are listed with thermal shutdown feature, however there is no specific thermal shutdown threshold  or tolerance in the specification. Can you advise the details?

Thanks,

Christina

  • Hi Christina,

LP2992 TYPICAL thermal shutdown is 160C. This is not ensured specification, this is outside the ensured operating temperature range. I could not find LM2985 from TI website? Can you double check if the part number you provided is correct?

  • Hi Jason,

How about LM2985-N? If you mentioned that this is not an ensured spec, does it mean that there is no guarantee at which point 160C the thermal shutdown will kicks in?

    Thanks,

    Christina

  • Hi Christina,

the thermal shutdown is only implemented to make the chip survive overheating. The customer must not use this feature to again and again turn-off the regulator, or use it to replace proper heat sinking. Each thermal shutdown tremendeously stresses the chip and decreases its lifetime. It's best to never have this thermal shutdown to occur...

  • Hi Christina,

I cannot find LM2985 on TI.com, the closest would be LP2985, is that what you are looking for? For your questions on the thermal shutdown, yes, thermal shutdown is not a guaranteed spec, we only provides typical values for thermal shutdown.
