TPS65094: The choise of MOSFET

Part Number: TPS65094
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CSD87381P, CSD87588N, CSD87331Q3D, CSD87350Q5D, CSD87352Q5D

Hi,

1. The MOSFET in Intel CRB are CSD87381P and CSD87588N, is it possible change to CSD87330 or CSD87350 or other discrete MOSFET?

2. If yes, what parameter should I take care except of Rds-on? Gate charge?

Thank you.

  • Hi,

TI recommended FET's are CSD87331Q3D, CSD87381P, and CSD87588N. However other FETs you mentioned should also work, but we cannot tell whether they work seamlessly with this controller. In general Rds-on, Gate charge/dynamic switching parameters , reverse recovery characteristics are the critical parameters to look at it. But purely based on these numbers, we cannot tell whether these FET's give you the performance you are looking for. I would recommend to test the below before making the decision.

    - Efficiency across load current: This will give an indication on whether you get efficiency improvements at your operating point. Lower RDSon does not mean that you will get best efficiency. With lower RDSon FET's, switching losses are higher and generally at lower load currents, efficiency is lower compared to the FET's with higher RDSon/lower switching losses.
    - switching node overshoot measurements: This should give an indication of whether there is significant cross current/shoot through current.
    - Thermal performance

However i have forwarded your request to Application Engineer supporting this device and he will get back to you if he has more information on this.

    Regards,

    Murthy
  • Hi Chentsu,

The only thing I would add to Murthy's response is that the CSD87350Q5D / CSD87352Q5D can be used in place of the CSD87588N for VCCGI. The CSD87350Q5D has lower Rdson so higher efficiency at high loads while CSD87352Q5D has lower gate charge so higher efficiency at light loads, with the two being equal at approximately 15 A.

  • Hi Kevin and Murthy,

    Thank you very much!
