LM5176: PMP21096 questions

Part Number: LM5176
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM25118,

Hi,

my customer would like to choose a device for USB type C power which meet:

        1. input voltage range:up to 24V,nominal input may be 12V or 18V

        2. output voltage can be set through FB:  5V@3A;  9V@3A ;  12V@3A ; 15V@3A ; 20V@3A

So I recommended PMP21096 which should be a good choice.

The question is:

1. whether LM74700 act as a reverse polarity protection is a must, since the type C physical connector would not have to chance to reverse connected from power.

2. All different output voltage can share one schematic, we only have to change the resistor divider?

3. Since it's a buck+boost circuit, so the customer find that LM25118 can also act as buck+boost controller and it's cheaper. They wonder if LM25118 is a good choice for type C power.

  • 1. No. It is an added feature but it is not necessary in your design.
    2. Yes. The Vout setting is controlled by CTL1, CTL2, and CTL3.
    3. The LM25118 is a buck-boost controller, but it is based on a different control scheme. It uses diodes other than the sync FETs, so the efficiency is low. It may work but performance should not be as good as the LM5176. Recommend to go for the LM5176.
