TPS3820: TPS3820-33QDBVRQ1 can be used to monitor 5V power supply??? if yes, are there any other hidden dangers???

Part Number: TPS3820

Dears,

TPS3820-33QDBVRQ1 can be used to monitor 5V power supply??? if yes, are there any other hidden dangers???

  • Gary,

TPS3820-33 can be used to monitor 3.3V rail, 5V rail, or any rail above VIT- (2.93V) in the datasheet. The hidden danger is the 3.3V version of this device trips the /RESET output when VDD falls below 2.93V typical. So if using this device to monitor 5V rail, your 5V rail has to drop to 2.93V for the device to trigger the output. Now the hidden danger is if you need a 5V rail and the rail drops to 3.1V for example, the rail is definitely not 5V but the device won't trigger to let you know. There is a 5V version TPS3820-50 that triggers when the VDD falls below 4.55V which is more appropriate for monitoring a 5V rail in my opinion.

Please let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks!
