TPS40303: Operation when EN/SS is above Absolute Maximum

Part Number: TPS40303

What should happen to the TPS40303 when pin 2 is above the absolute maximum of 7V.

We are seeing low impedance between VDD (pin 1) and EN/SS (pin 2) due to surface corrosion caused by water.  In many instances with 14VDC on VDD, the EN/SS pin is measuring 12.5VDC, whereas known good boards measure 5.5VDC.

If I remove the corrosion the TPS40303 works as intended.

Thanks,

Adam

  • Hi Adan,
I will forward your question to the responsible engineer.

  • Adam,

It is not recommended to go above abs max of any pin. I think what you are seeing with the water is that there is an internal short and the VDD voltage is showing up on pin 2. When you remove the moisture the internal LDO works making sure the EN/SS pin2 does not go above the abx max ratings. The actions should be to make sure to address the moisture sources and not allow it to damage the part.
