TLV713P-Q1: Maximum allowed ESR value

Part Number: TLV713P-Q1

Hi Champs,

My customer is interested in TLV713P-Q1 for their product, and asked whether TI can provide available ESR value for output capacitor though there is a description in the datasheet saying X5R/X7R types of ceramic capacitor is recommended.

Could you provide if there is a clear criteria for recommended ESR value?

Best regards,

  • Hi Nobuo,

    The TLV713-Q1 is designed to be stable with any output capacitor. Keep in mind that, although the LDO will still be stable, using a capacitor with a high ESR could degrade the internal control loop phase margin and increase transient settling time by pushing the ESR zero to lower frequencies. To ensure that this zero does not impact phase margin its frequency should be outside of the LDO's bandwidth. For cap-less LDO's this is typically around 10 kHz. The maximum recommended ESR depends on the output capacitor and can be calculated as follows:

    fz = 1/(2*pi*ESR*Cout) > 10 kHz

    Thanks,
    Gerard
