TPS23756: How to choose pulse transformer for Flyback topology

Hi TI,

Refer to reference design SLVA475, it recommend using pulse transformer to driver 2nd side SR MOSFET.

Here are the questions:

1. How T3 be calculated?

2. Is there any document that teaching how to design pulse transformer?

3. Could I replace this transformer as a isolated gate driver? if yes, what's the part number?

www.arrow.com/.../pulse-electronics-corporation - Arrow has the PAO184 in stock. The item has been discontinued, so you will have to replace it one day. The data sheet is here: static6.arrow.com/.../spm2007_61.pdf. Yes it is an isolated gate driver. You could roll your own or look at the data sheet and check Coilcraft, Cooper, Vishay, or Gowanda for a replacement. Just give the data sheet to the Man. Rep and they will find one for you. Thanks for your responce, but I'd like to make the pulse transformer myself, so that's why I want to know the detail about pulse X'mer design, thank you.

Gate Drv Xfmr DES PET23.pdfThe PAO184 data sheet has the details of the gate transformer. The PDF enclosed explains how to design a gate drive transformer. Just use the specifications from the PAO184 data sheet and follow the procedure outlined in the PDF file.

To address your questions, directly:

1. We do not have an app note specifically about magnetic design, but we have very detailed app note about designing gate drives circuits here: www.ti.com/.../slua618.pdf

2. See #1

3. Chuck's recommendation is my recommendation. Transformer vendors should either have a similar spec gate transformer or can help you design one if you give them the datasheet for this one.

Hello Chentsu,

I think the TPS23756 isolated gate driver is a good alternative as long as it can provide sufficient gate drive current, isolation, and input and output voltage ratings. Also check for maximum dv/dt and di/dt. It's just a question of grinding through the data sheet and comparing it to the drive requirements of your power converter.
