TPS54560: TPS54560

Part Number: TPS54560

Hi TI team,

We have designed power supply circuit using TPS54560DDAR IC, today we were doing board check.

As per the circuit, VIN is the Input 48V from the Battery and when the Keyswitch is a ON/OFF, If the Switch is closed, VCC_48V is geneated and the same voltage is connected to TPS54560 IC.

I started the board check up by giveing VCC_IN(48V) and afer 30 sec I made the keyswitch ON, I got the sound from relay, then 5V was coming,

After that, I made the Key switch OFF, Till here no issue, Then when I again made the Keyswitch ON, I THe TPS54560 IC blown off at its input side.

I couldn't get any reason for this cause, Kindly support on to this resolve.

Thanks

  • Hi Manjunath,

I forwarded your enquiry to the product expert.

  • Manjunath ,

Add a bulk electrolytic cap patallel to C7 (22uF/100V) to protect the input against the ringing due to parasitic inductance of the input trace . Also follow the layout of the EVM for you application .

  • Hi Ambreesh,

I have kept almost same layout guidelines as per the EVAL board.

In that blown PCB, the output capacitor C9-47uF/10V was shorted(i.e, both the ends of the capacitor were shorted).

I took one more PCB assembled it again with the fresh components, I kept the Key-switch button initially ON ,
When I gave 48V power I got 5V at the output and then I made it switch OFF and then again I made the switch ON , immediately the IC blown(top side of the IC broken).
I'm suspicion that, as soon as the relay is made energized, there will be a huge spike got generated and the same is affecting on the TPS54560 regulator input circuitry.

Do you think if I add a 22uF/100V in parallel to the input capacitors is sufficient to block the ripple or
if we want to change/add some protection circuit kind of things in the relay circuitry?

    Kindly support on this.

    Thanks
  • Hi Ambresh,

    Kindly help on this probelm.

    Thanks

  • Hello Manjunath ,

My recommendation here wil be to add an electrolytic cap at the input (22uF/100V) and then take input and output waveforms during the start up sequence .

If you see transient at the input higher than 60V , you may need to add TVS depending on the transient duration .
