BQ76200EVM-606: NORMAL mode,the leakage current is 180uA

Part Number: BQ76200EVM-606
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76200

Hello Team,

I test the BQ76200EVM-606,add 20V voltage between J4 and J1,when CHG_EN = Hi, DSG_EN = Hi, CP_EN = Hi, PCHG_EN = Lo, PMON_EN = Lo.the leakage current value is 180uA,when CHG_EN = Hi, DSG_EN = Hi, CP_EN = Hi, PCHG_EN = Hi, PMON_EN = Lo,the leakage current value is 1.3mA.when CHG_EN = Hi, DSG_EN = Hi, CP_EN = Hi, PCHG_EN = HI, PMON_EN = HI.the leakage current value is 2.8mA, BQ76200 datasheet indicate when Normal mode(CHG_EN = Hi, DSG_EN = Hi, CP_EN = Hi, PCHG_EN = Lo, PMON_EN = Lo) is 50~60uA.Why is there such a big difference?when BQ76200 PMON_EN=Hi and PCHG_EN=Hi,the leakage current value is too high,what is the cause?

  • Hi John,
The control inputs of the bq76200 have a recommended input voltage of up to 14V while the BAT voltage can be much higher, so the bq76200EVM-606 has a zener diode circuit included to provide voltage limited control voltages, this can add unexpected current to the supply, but that is not what your are seeing.
The PCHG circuit has an internal bias current of about 1.5 mA which will be drawn from the higher of the BAT or PACK pins when active.
The The PMON circuit has an internal bias current which varies with voltage, approximately 3 mA at higher voltages. See figures 7 and 8 of www.ti.com/.../slua794
PMON is typically on only a short time. PCHG current can be undesired since the battery is typically low when precharge is used. A discrete precharge control can be made with lower current. When a system has both a precharge and predischarge circuit the bq76200 PCHG might be preferred for the pre-discharge due to the current you observe.
