TPS5401: Estimated behavior outside abs max VIN values

Part Number: TPS5401

Team,

regarding TPS5401DGQR, do you have any estimation what happens if VIN < -0.3V is applied?

I know this violates the abs max values and is out of spec, but is there any estimation for

  • part behavior and/or
  • expected kind of damage to the part?

Thanks!

  • Hello Franziskus,

We do not recommend subjecting parts to conditions outside of absolute maximum ratings. We cannot ensure that the part will not be damaged.

If VIN is below -0.3 V and the part is hot, current can be drawn through ESD protection diodes, the body diode of the power MOSFET, and other internal diodes. If there is positive voltage present on any of the IC’s pins the part can be at risk of latch up.

Note that with all other pins grounded or open, if a current less than 100 uA and voltage greater than -1 V can be applied to test continuity while mounted on a PCB. If this is your reason for asking about the negative abs max rating, please send me an email at robert.blattner@ti.com. I will put you in touch with our quality department concerning continuity testing.

    Regards, Robert
