BQ76PL455A-Q1: BQ76PL455Q1EVM GUI for EM1402EVM

Part Number: BQ76PL455A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EM1402EVM, EMB1499Q

Hi,

I have EM1402EVM and i want to get 1st test so can i use BQ76PL455Q1EVM GUI for test?

Thanks and regards,

  • i am trying to connect to GUI i am selecting correct serial port but is giving error "Unable to open com port". Is there any switch that i have to change. My EM1402EVM? It has only one switch which has written DIFF and SINGLE. Another thing is on TI website i got schematic for Rev. A board but what i have is Rev. B. Whats the difference?
  • Hi Omkar,

Yes this should work properly using the FTDI UART to USB cable. Have you downloaded the latest drivers here: www.ftdichip.com/.../VCP.htm.

Also check that you have powered the board correctly (VIO, VDIG rise to 5V ) and you have the switch in single mode for a base board.

    Best Regards,

    Taylor
  • Yes votages are right i can see serial port in device manager and port is opening in real term terminal but not in bq76pl. I have seen some comments on community and most of the people facing the same issue. Please help us to find solution.

  • Hi Omkar,

In this case, this issue is not related to the pl455a and likely related to PC/software. We have been able to resolve this issue with many users in the past by checking the following:

Can you verify that you downloaded the correct 32 bit or 64 bit version?
Did you verify checking other cables?
Can you confirm that nothing else is using the COM port? (Teraterm/realterm/serial port)
Can you check with a different USB port and another Windows PC/OS?

    Best Regards,

    Taylor
  • Hi Taylor,

As you said i checked possibilities,

Can you verify that you downloaded the correct 32 bit or 64 bit version?

i downloaded from GUI from http://www.ti.com/tool/bq76pl455evm-gui-sw?jktype=recommendedresults and downloaded USB to TTL driver from link you given

Did you verify checking other cables?

Dirver successfully updated and can see port 3 and its working fine, i did verify with short TX RX and typing and receiving on Real Term so it is working.

Can you confirm that nothing else is using the COM port? (Teraterm/realterm/serial port)

Yea no other software is using serial port

Can you check with a different USB port and another Windows PC/OS?

I tried with other ports and other PCs with windows 7, windows 8.1. still its giving unable to open port.

I just connected USB to serial and this is only power source to the board. VIO = 5.3 V and VP = 1.8 V and VDIG = 1.8 V. I have not connected Cells or 12 V supply. I read VDIG should be 5.3 V and its getting 5.3 V from cells supply, is it right? whats the problem here to not opening port? am i need to connect cells there? to open your GUI?

  • Hi Omkar,

Sorry for the delay, yes as shown in Section 6 the bq76pl455 EVM and GUI User's Guide here: www.ti.com/.../sluuba7a.pdf you will need to connect cells up to correctly run the GUI. Please let us know if you were able to resolve this issue.

    Thanks,

    Taylor
  • Hi Taylor,

Yea after connecting cells its opened but is not balancing. I connected 6 cells and remaining pins i short with pin16. so is showing voltage in cells tab of every cell. When i am start balance between 2 cells cell 1 and cell 2 having voltages  3.85v and 3.75 respectively. i wait for 35 minutes but they were not balanced. What is the balancing current, can i control? I am using 3.7v and 2000mAh cells. Is it possible with GUI and EM1402EVM? or i have to use example code?

  • Hi Omkar,

Yes you will need to move towards the example code for using the ACB functionality correctly with the EMB devices as the GUI is attempting to enable the CB using only the bq76pl455 and would work correctly when using the b76pl455EVM board that has the EQ pins connected to external cell balancing FETs.

  • Hi Taylor,

I think we got the problem as it is active system we will need TMS570 launch pad with example code connected to BMS board and that launch pad connected to PC through USB. That way it will, I will check that. I am not understanding how balancing is going on here? I was reading documentation "TMS570 Active cell balancing battery management design guide" I am little confused with some lines. Check attachment for snap of it.

  • I have another question, I am following "TMS570 Active cell balancing battery management design guide" following connection between TMS570 and EM1402EVM but there is something that i don't understood is Remove R8 and R9. where is that and why? FUI attaching that page

  • Hi Omkar,

Yes, R8 and R9 remove the path to alternate communication protocols and allow for the mcu to support the UART emulation to communicate with our devices. These resistors are located near the center of the launchpad board. For any further information on this, I would have to direct you to the TMS570 support team that is on a separate E2E forum. As for EMB devices functionality, the info you highlighted is correct and can be a little confusing as it is a complex design. The best way to get an understanding would be to read up on the EMB1499Q datasheet, watch this training video training.ti.com/demonstration-16-channel-active-cell-balance-solution, and use this design reference www.ti.com/.../sluuas6a.pdf if you need clarification on how it works.

    Best Regards,
