TPS54060: Bump on PH pin, why and what to do?

Part Number: TPS54060

Hi guys,

I use the TPS54060 in an application where the output pin PH (pin 10) shows a non-square behaviour when the input voltage rises. I was hoping you could explain what I'm seeing and how to avoid it.

The blue trace shows the PH pin with approx. 10V input voltage and 3.6V / 56mA on the output. The inductor is 22µH.

Best,

Børge

  • What you are seeing is the normal DCM operation of a buck regulator. When the inductor current reaches zero, the inductance and
capacitance on the PH node will ring as a resonant circuit. You can move the operating point were this DCM behavior is seen by using a larger
inductor. However, this behavior will do no harm to the application. If you choose to use a large inductor, please be sure to adhere to any recommendations in the data sheet regarding inductor sizing.
