LM5041: Input Capacitor calculation

Part Number: LM5041

Dear Sir,

The total input capacitor used is 8.8uF (2.2uF x 4Nos) for a input of 140W (approx) in the LM5041 EVAL board.

Could you please explain the input capacitor calculation for this configuration.

Thanks

Nesh

  • Hello Nesh,
This is a 140W DCDC converter with a nominal 48V input and the input capacitance is normally chosen at about 15W per uF.
So for a 140uF design you can expect to use about 9uF.
The final value selected is based on the quality of the selected capacitor, EMI test results and the amount of input ripple required.
If you need further information on how the select input capacitance value , please check section 4.5 of the Texas Instruments SLUA303 application report for greater detail.
    Regards
    John
