UCC27712: Another Part for HCPL-3120/J312, HCNW3120 for Induction Heating Application.

Part Number: UCC27712
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC23513

Hi,

Currently, I am using a UCC27712 gate driver for the IH application.

In this new circuit, I am trying to find an alternative part for HCPL-3120/J312, HCNW3120 which seems like an optocoupler gate driver.

I m also trying to figure out how the circuit works as well. Do you think this is zero volts turn-on circuit on the IGBT side? I can't see how this works, I need some help understanding this.

The IGBTs Specs:-

Thank you so much for your time!

  • Hello Tony,
Thank you for the interest in TI gate drivers. For the question on an alternative part for the HCPL-3120/J312, HCNW3120, TI has an isolated opto compatible driver which is the UCC23513. This part offers higher performance with the opto diode compatible drive input and a small package.
The datasheet can be found here: www.ti.com/.../ucc23513.pdf
I am not an expert on the induction heating applications but my basic understanding is the following.
The induction coil is an inductive load which is driven with a series or parallel/series capacitance to create a resonant circuit. The heating coil current can be maximized or controlled by operating at or close to the resonant frequency of the coil/resonant capacitance.
Regarding if this will result in ZVS turn on, I do not know enough to comment on this. I think this will depend on the operating frequency relative to the load resonant frequency. I think a simple simulation of the power circuit can show these details.
