TPS797: Unused Open Drain Output effects on current draw

Part Number: TPS797

Hi team,

I'm using TPS797 in one of my applications. If you have a unused open drain output, is it better from a total current draw perspective to leave it open, or tie it high, or maybe low?

Thanks,

Brian

  • Hi Brian,

We would recommend that the unused PG pin and NC pin both be tied to GND. Having the PG pin tied to GND will prevent any current draw through the PG pin as both sides of the pulldown FET will be GND. The primary heatsink for TPS797, like most linear regulators, is the PCB copper local to the LDO. By having both the unused PG pin and NC pin tied to GND, you will allow for more GND copper local to the LDO. This will yield better thermal performance for your application.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
