BQ2980: BQ2980

Part Number: BQ2980

Hello,

I'm trying to understand what "factory configured" means exactly.  I'm trying to design a single cell protection circuit and the data sheet says the Vovp, Vuvp, Voc, and Vscd are all factory configured.  I'm wondering what would be the typical setting coming out of the factory would be?  I'm trying to limit my charge and discharge to 2A, short circuit detection is flexible, and want to protect the battery from an over voltage of 4.2 V and under voltage of 2.8 V.  I expect I simply just change my shunt resistor to accommodate the current protection setting, but what do I change to accommodate the over and under voltage?  Or can I specifically ask for the settings from the factory?

Thanks,

-Kris

  • Hi Kristopher,
The "factory configured" note means that the values are selected at the factory when the bq2980 is produced and will not be able to be changed on the board. Defined configurations are shown in section 5 of the bq2980 data sheet. See the product folder or contact your TI representative for ordering.
For current you can scale your sense resistor value to get the device to protect at an appropriate threshold, although the ratio of over current and short circuit current will be fixed by the configuration. Voltage however will not scale well. The configurations shown today do not include a 4.2 V OV setting although that is in the capability of the part shown in table 1. For new configurations contact your TI representative to see if a new configuration can be supported with your volume.
  • Okay, so in other words, these configurations are specified by a request from the customer?

I'm a student and don't have a TI representative.  How would I go and specify my desired configurations when I order some of these?

  • Hi Kristopher,
Yes, configurations are specified on request from the customer.
There is a non-trivial investment to release a new configuration, so it is usually when there is a forecast of many units. Sometimes a configuration might support several customer requests, but many times it is a single order.
You might check with your university lab manager or coordinator about an existing TI contact. Generally inquiries can be made with the "Customer support center" link at the bottom of the page.
  • Okay, and what can I expect if I buy one from, say, Mouser? Are they going to be middle of the road configurations? Or just whatever Mouser decided? If so, can those configuration settings be publicly divulged?

I could tolerate middle of the road configurations, but the under voltage would be a little low for my taste.
  • Hi Kristopher,
It is likely that a distributor will carry only the released configurations (BQ298000) It is unlikely they would define a special and hold the inventory. Once it is defined I would expect it would be public, although the numbers in section 5 of the bq2980 data sheet are not continuous, so there must be some configurations in consideration which have not progressed enough to be included.
