BQ33100EVM-001: bq33100 EVM- CFET

Part Number: BQ33100EVM-001
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ33100

Hi,

I am using bq33100 EVM for balancing the supercapacitor of value 600F. I want to do the complete learning process for calculation of the value of capacitor and ESR. Because the board is showing the data flash (default) values of capacitor and ESR.

EVM malfunctions whenever I am trying to charge the capacitor by issuing command x0046 to enable CFET flag in the operation status register. When I issue the FET control command, the board started to flow higher current of 32A. I am unable to understand why these happen.

Is it a possibility of failure of the transistor because of the heavy current? If yes, what measures I should take to avoid a malfunction in the EVM. Please help me to resolve these issues.

Thank you,

Grishma

  • hi Grishma

Pls follow the instructions in the EVM user guide to set up the EVM. You should also limit the current of your power supply prior to using the board. How many caps in series do you have? Make sure none of the caps are shorted. What is the voltage value you are applying to the system pin?

    thanks
    Onyx
  • Hi Onyx,

The current of my power supply is less than 500mA. There are 5 supercapacitors are connected in series which have a value of 3000F each.

I am applying 15000mV to the VCC pin.

I don't understand why heavy current is flowing through the board whenever i am issuing the FET control command?

    Thanks,

    Grishma

  • Hi Grishma,

The board connectors on the board are not rated for 32 A. If you believe the onboard charger is causing the issue, please use an external charge circuit and external board suited for higher currents for these supercapacitors and connect low current signal wires to the EVM.

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Kahler
