UCC28780: UCC28780 PD charger/ SR MOS damage

Part Number: UCC28780

Hi Tis:
I test the SR MOS Vds on theUCC28780EVM-002,

In light load, I found that the SR Mos Vpeak would exceed 150V, but the rated voltage is 150V,  does the MOSFET demage?

  • If the spikes over 150V, then the snubber should be re-tuned to make sure not exceeding 150V. During our EVM bench test, we did not see this high spike so the spikes might not be real, or can be real due to tolerance from board to board.

On the other hand, the MOSFET avalanche capability may help to sustain voltage spikes over 150V if these spikes with energy less than avalanche.

But if it is real, then the snubber should be retuned to make the spikes less than 150V, although these spikes may not damage the MOSFET if the energy less than its avalanche.
