BQ24092: High Voltage on the input

Good Morning.

I am using the BQ24092DGQR chip on a handheld device with a lipo battery that is charged through Micro-USB-interface. My team have some concerns regarding the input voltage from the USB. In the case that the user have a faulty USB charger that is leaking the AC mains Voltage to the USB interface. Leading to that we have 220VAC on the "IN" pin pf the chip. Do you have any experiance or test regarding this.

Hello Mathias
The BQ24092 family of devices linear battery chargers with input overvoltage protection. But the input overvoltage protection is will prevent damage for a DC source or voltage overshoot.
The devices are non-isolated converters similar to an LDO or linear regulator, not intended for AC mains isolation.

Thank you for your Quick response.

What I am looking for is what happends to the chip when AC is applied. To rephrase; In what way does the chip break when 220VAC is applied. And I guess there is 3 possible states.

1. short circuit
2. Open circuit
3. Unknown

Hi Mathias
The Absolute Max Rating for BQ2409X Input Voltage is -0.3 and +12V. Beyond this limit permanent damage to the device is possible.
Exposure to 220VAC can be expected to cause permanent damage but characterization beyond that is difficult, short circuit, open circuit and unknown are possible.
