TPS65132S: Overcurrent Protection of TPS65132S

Part Number: TPS65132S

Hi team,

1.Does the TPS65132S have Overcurrent protection with 150mA drive mode(SYNC = High)?

2.Is it possible to damage to IC when the current on the negative supply side exceeds 170mA for 340us with SYNC = High? Please have a look at this waveform.

best regards

Kota

  • Hi Kota,

I have notified our expert regarding this topic. Please expect a response by 5/17/19.

    Thanks,

  • Hello Kota,
The device will not get damaged when overload condition happens. As you see in your scope plot, the output voltage will continue to drop as the load continues to increase until the voltage becomes 0 at very high overload condition. Once overload condition is removed, the device can continue normal operation. I hope that this answers your question.

  • Hi Liaqat,
    Thank you for your reply.

TPS65132S have not overcurrent protection, but the device will not damaged under overload conditions.
    However, it is not guaranteed.
    Is this understanding correct?
Should I recommend operation at 150mA or less when introducing the device to a customer?
  • Hi Kota,
TPS65132S does have internal current limit mechanism and as the load increases beyond 150mA, the negative output voltage will start to increase (toward 0V) and will eventually become ~0V if there is a severe overload condition. So there is no chance of device damage. The only thing customer needs to be concerned about is that as the load increases beyond 150ma, the negative voltage will not stay in regulation so the application should expect that. But there is concern from device damage point of view.
    I hope this clarifies.

    Kind Regards,
    Liaqat
