DCR010505: damaged

Part Number: DCR010505

hi sir,

We use DCR010505 parts for generating an isolated 5V supply. We’re getting some field failures around these parts,  the failure mode  usually  appears  as  no output ,we've had  7 failure samples since last year.

one sample appears 6.6V output (it is the same as "DCR010505: damaged DC-DC converters",which I have got at e2e  forum),but that  sample ultimately has no output voltage。

some samples are very hot. All the failure samples have abnormal output resistance ,I measured the output  resistance between  +VOUT and -VOUT with a multimeter ,value is only about 100Ω,but the good chip is about 100KΩ. I guess the internal LDO has a short circuit.

The chip is used at an Interface Circuit  for  a dry contact   status detection,  We use a cable to connect the dry contact and the PCBA board .I measured the noise on the cable, and also on the DCR's output。now the  wave is as follows:

CH1: the noise on line

CH2: the noise on DCR's output

the noise  amplitude on the DCR'is large and seems keep  sync as the line noise。

I want to ask if this noise will cause damage to the chip? I checked the datasheet and found no relevant instructions.

my email is anbin.cui@united-imaging.com, we can also talk about off line.

please help me and thank you very much!

  • Hi Anbin,

Can you provide the schematic and PCB layout? Also what are your initial conditions (VIN,VOUT,IOUT)? I can't see to see that attachment, can you perhaps attach the file as a zipped file?

    Jimmy
  • Hi Jimmy,

sorry for reply so late,I am busy solving this  problem all days, now I have attached  the schematic and  noise test result,  the noise or interference   seems  large!

VIN is 5V,which  is suppled by an uModule (LTM4619), VOUT is also 5V,IOUT  is about 10mA(Only optocoupler consumes current)schematic&noise.zip

  • the dry contact is connected between Pin 3 and pin6 of the J19 (you can see at the schematic), normally,it is closed 。
  • Hi Anbin,

For clarification, is the failure event described as no output voltage or is it something else. An ohm reading of 100ohms between voltage output and output ground would indicate something in the device is shorted. However, the noise measurement you've provided shows a 5V output on CH2 but there are very large noise spikes.

Also the input voltage to the TI DCR power module, that is produced from what I presume is the LTM4619 in CH1, looks very abnormal. From the looks of it CH1 swings between +20V and -20V which is concerning. Note that input voltage outside the absolute maximum rated input voltage of 7V may cause permanent damage to the device and affect the behavior of the part.

To troubleshoot this, can you get a fresh board, remove the LTM4619 device, take a stable power supply and provide input into the DCR power module and probe VIN,VOUT, and power good?

As for the schematic the component selection follows the typical application schematic seen in Figure 27.

    Regards,
    Jimmy
  • Hi Anbin,

Did you get a chance to isolate and test the DCR010505 with an independent power supply?

    Regards,
    Jimmy
  • Hi Anbin,

May I get an update on this and if isolating the DCR010505 provides more insight on the failure mechanism?

    Regards,

    Jimmy

  • Hi Anbin,

I haven't heard back from you in a while. I assume you were able to resolve this issue on your end. Because of this I will be closing this thread. If you have any further questions, simply reply to this post and this thread will reopen for discussion.

    Regards,

    Jimmy
