I am looking for a battery protection IC

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2980, BQ77PL157A4225, BQ77PL900, BQ77905, BQ24610

I am looking for a battery protection IC. That can handle handle a 6S battery pack 22.2V in the 1-8 parallel configuration there is no access to the individual cells within the 6S battery pack. The 6S battery pack has over discharge protection built in and the charge balancing. Furthermore, the 6S battery packs will be charged outside of this system. I would like to add temperature and short protection to the parallel battery pack utilizing 1-8 6S battery packs. I was looking at BQ2980 however the voltages are set for single cell. I am not sure if it's wise to rig this part to work with 22.2V. Could you suggest a better part for this application? If you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask. Thank you for your time.

  • hi Ivan
Have you considered the BQ77PL900, the BQ77PL157A4225, and the BQ77905

    thanks

  • Hi Onyx

It appears that these IC require access to each individual cell inside the 6S battery pack. I don't have access to the individual cells inside the a 6S battery pack. I am not sure if they would function properly without those connection being made.

I am looking for something similar to this charger bq24610, but on the discharge side.

The only way I can think of solving this is using a microcontroller to monitor temperature, voltage and current. Then control FETS based on that information, because I cant find the battery protection IC that can take 22V without access to individual cells.

    Thank you

    Ivan

  • Ivan,
The danger in safety conditions of a lithium iron battery is in the individual cells not the entire stack hence the need to monitor each cell individually. We do not have any protector that monitors just the stack voltage
    thanks

I am using off the shelf battery pack that has cell balancing and individual cell protection, however, doesn't have temperature protection. I want to place multiple of them into parallel configuration and I am mostly trying to avoid them charging each other, overheating and internal short.

    Thank you

    Ivan

  • Hi Ivan,

We don't have a part to do what you want.  Our devices would be more like the part inside your off the shelf pack which does the individual cell monitoring, balancing and protection.  To manage multiple batteries in a system you will need to develop a system power controller to switch or or the batteries together and measure and respond to system situations appropriately.
