TPS2540EVM-623: USB Connector Spec on Eval Board

Part Number: TPS2540EVM-623
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2540, TPS2546

Hello,

I am currently designing a board to have the capability of charging a Samsung Tablet about 100% of the time. I checked your eval board USB connector and it looks like it is rated at 1 Amp, however your board data sheet details a max of 2800 mA (2.8A) of current for downstream charging. Is there something I am missing or is the current going to be limited to 1A for charging? It seems like the connector shouldn't be able to hand more than 1A max. Also is the TPS2540 tested with Samsung tablets? If I plan to use Ipad or Samsung Tablets is the TPS2540 part interchangable with either tablet?

Thanks,

Mike

  • Hello Michael,

It could be the fault of the original EVM designer to not check the current capabilities of that specific port. The EVM will not be limited to 1A as long as the current limiting resistors allow for greater than 1A of charging.

The TPS2540 does not have the capability to support Samsung devices as it does not incorporate the non-complaint charging scheme. I would recommend using the TPS2546 instead, which is our most popular BC1.2 charging device
