TPS756: Failure mode for TPS75633

When TPS75633 supplied overvoltage and failure device, what is TPS75633 operation? 

For example, through Vin directly to output side, 0V output, etc.

    I am not sure if I got your question right, are you asking when Vin is shorting to Vout, how the device would responde?

    Sorry for not enough information,

    Condition is overvoltage of Vin input side, exceed the absolute maximum rating(for example: 6.2V).

    Customer want to know Vout operation(0V, less than 3.3V, the other) after Vin exceed absolute maximum rating and failure.

    Stresses beyond those listed under "absolute maximum ratings” may cause permanent damage to the device. The damage could happen regardless of the state of Vout (0V, less than 3.3V and the other). 

    What's the reason you or your customer is trying to apply a voltage higher than its rated maximum voltage?

    Our considering reason is two pattern below;

    ①Large spike exceed maximum voltage (by any accidents).

    ②Continuous supply 6.2V.

    Sorry for the late response. Please see my comments under your questions. 

    ①Large spike exceeds maximum voltage (by any accidents).

    Having a few extremely short duration spikes by accidents may not necessarily likely to damage the device; it depends on what the maximum voltage for the spike and that's the duration of the violation. Having voltage spikes outside of the absolute maximum range can potentially degrading the device which may lead to EOS damage that will stop the function of the LDO completely.

    ②Continuous supply 6.2V.

    Continuously having a voltage higher than rated max should be avoided. Each device is tested and qualified towards its listed maximum voltage and having a voltage higher than the rated max continuously may significantly reduce the life span of a device and increase the expected failure rate.

    Additional question about after EOS damaged, is there possibility to the other case of LDO stop completely?

    For example, when internal FET "subtly" damaged (not completely damaged), I guess that not to be 0Vout.

  • Hi Satoshi-san,

    You are right. Spikes over absolute maximum voltage rating on pins could partially damage a device, and with a subtle damage, the Vout may still work but again due to the partial damage, the life span of the device may become shorter and the device has a higher chance to fail.
