UCC28063: ZCD sensing without windings

Part Number: UCC28063
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28056, UCC28070, UCD3138, UCC28060

Hello!
Is it possible to drive ZCD UCC28063 without aux winding, by sensing drain voltage with RC divider?
Thanks.

  • Hello Dovhal,

The UCC28063 was design to be used with an aux winding and I am not sure how well it would work with an RC divider off the drain voltage of a FET.

I do know the UCC28056 was designed to operate off the drain of the FET.  However TI does not offer this in an interleaved PFC.

I searched TIs web sight and found no application note on how to accomplish this.  You could order the EVM and try to modify it to see if you could get ZCD sensing off the drain.  However, this is not something TI would guarantee.

    Regards,

  • Thanks for your reply. I have another question: is it possible to use UCC28063 in bridgeless configuration?

  • Hello James,

You might be able to get it to work in semi-bridgless; however, it will not in full bridge less PFC due to the lack of gate drivers and appropriate timing.

The UCC28070 has been proven work in bridgeless and there is a reference design available on the web; as well as,  and application note explaining how to do this.  http://www.ti.com/tool/PMP40261?keyMatch=BRIDGELESS&tisearch=Search-EN-technicaldocument&usecase=part-number, http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slua517/slua517.pdf

The UCD3138 can be designed for totem pole bridge less PFC and the following link will get you to a reference part using this design.

The C2000 device can be used for CrM bridge less totem pole PFC.  The following link will get you to a 1.6 kW reference design using this device.

Please note if you want to use either of these devices in a bridge less PFC please re post it with a different title so the appropriate applications engineer can can support your design.

  • Thanks for your reply!

I want to use uc28063 in semi-bridgless configuration for 800W. In the case of a low input voltage, a high input current through a bridge rectifier will cause a lot of power dissipation. So i want to reduce losses by using semi bridgeless pfc configuration.
How should i connect current sense signal (CS) to uc28063 in this configuration? Does CS participate in regulation and control of the output voltage? Can i disconnect it or use it for sense current from each mosfet (drain source) using shunt resistors?

Perhaps you will offer better solution.

  • Hello,

There was an article written years ago that discussed semi bridgeless PFC vs interleaved PFC from power electronic technologies.  You can find the article at the following link.

This article evaluated the UCC28060 CrM PFC in a semi bridgeless PFC configuration.  It shows the circuitry required.  You will have to get a full PDF version of the article to show you how to connect up the UCC28060 in this configuration.  Please note the UCC28063 is an improved version of the UCC28060 and the techniques in this article will work for Semi Bridgeless PFC.

    Mike

  • Hello! Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately all images in that article have "dead" links and unavailable. Where can i get PDF version? Can you send it to me via email?

    Regards,

    Artem.

  • I uploaded a PDF version of the article and I hope it helps you with your design.
