WEBENCH® Tools/BQ40Z60: BQStudio

Part Number: BQ40Z60
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: GPCCHEM

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

Hi I have the BQ40z60 in my Power Management Module design based on reference design.

I have 3 questions:

1. I need to know how to setup pin TS2 to control charging LEDS without thermistor. Only the Mosfet, resistors and the LED.

2. I need to know how to report correctly the percentage of the battery charge, because in the majority of the cases it is reporting bad information. We have a battery without every cell access, so I design a cell emulation.

3. If I have a thermistor in my battery but I need to control the IC temperature, are the protections for overtemperature, undertemperature, enabled when we have in temperature enable setting : TS1 OFF and TSint ON ??

Thanks for the support.

  • Hi Alejandro,

I'm sorry, we don't support thermistor control in that manner

Please follow the procedure to get a chem ID first for your cell using GPCCHEM. This gauge is not usable without access to cell terminals not just top of stack and bottom.

Yes, the protections are enabled by default.

We have documentation available on the product page, please refer to that.

  • Hi Batt,

    thanks for the support.

I am concerned about battery protections because in my case I have a thermistor from the battery pack, and I set up the Temperature Enable TS1: ON and TSInt: ON, others bits in OFF mode.

In Temperature Mode I have every bit in off mode, I don't know if this is correct.

And my proctections OTC and OTF are set in 50 ºC threshold and recovery at 45 ºC, but when I increase the temperature with a thermal chamber, the protections didn`t work. I think that the correct behaviour is stop/dicrease the charge current but It didn't stop the charge.

Please give some advices to solve that point.

  • Hi Alejandro,

The TS pins can either monitor the battery or the FET. In your case, setting mode to 0 sets all thermistors to monitor the battery. That is OK. But if your protections are reset in the DF, then you will not be able to trigger them. Please check to see if they are enabled. If they are and you have Temperature Mode set to 0, then you can't trigger OTF as the gauge thinks none of the thermistors is monitoring the FETs. You can set TS1 or TS2 to monitor the FET if you have them.

  • Hi Batt,

We have a 4th issue and we consider it to be CRITICAL:

Problem Description: Charging is not working properly after the initial charge.
During the first cycle of charge the system works as expected with the following steps:

    1) Charging until 16.7V (100%)
    2) Waiting 6-10 hours
    3) Discharging until 13.5 V (0%)

Without disconnecting the battery from the PMM board, we repeat the cycle and, during the charging step, the battery stops charging at 14.5V, getting a status of overcurrent in the battery, having a charging current of 300 mA as expected.
We will send you the log of this charging cycle with all the data.
Thank you in advance for your help.
  • Hi Gabriel,

We have discussed this issue privately today. Your battery has an internal protection circuit that interferes with the voltage seen by the gauge. That needs to be addressed first before anything gauging related can be done. I'm closing this thread as your FAE has already approached us privately about it.
