BQ2970: Short Cut recovery on BQ 2970

Dear Sir

We plan to use the BQ2970 in a E-Cigaret application and the idea is once the battery ( LiPo 3,7V / 200mA) is welded to the PCB, to create a short shortcut on the 2 charger pad in order to disconnect the battery from the application, this allowing a long storage period 

we plan that the BQ2970 reconnect the battery to the application only when the Lipo charger tis connected to the E-Cigaret

It is not clear in the documentation that this operation could work because it is mentionned that the device get out the SC state by removing the short cut   

Some testing that we have done show that once we remove the shortcut the device automaticaly reconnect de battery to the application

Can you help to clarify ?

    The condition for recovering from a short circuit fault is described in table 7.6 on the datasheet. Vsccr is described as the release of short circuit detection voltage. It states that the fault is released when the difference between the BAT pin and the V- pin is greater or equal to 1V.

    We have purchase an eval board and the finding  we have is that after a shortcut there is a need to have a voltage coming from a batteries charger in order to switch back on the circuit

    Our understanding  from the documentation is that when the short cut condtion are release, the batterie is connected back to the application, there is a nuance in this two behavior

    Which one is correct ?

  • Hi Jean Raymond,

    The device will recover from short circuit if the battery voltage is greater than 1V. If the battery voltage is lower, then connecting a charger may be necessary.

    The discharge over current fault does require a charger connection to recover, so it is possible your device is experiencing this fault as well. That would explain the need for a charger connection to resume to normal operation.
